Buying Artificial Grass - 5 Reminders

5 Things to Consider Before You Buy Artificial Grass

1. Educate yourself on the types of grasses available – The days of tacky plastic-looking artificial grass are gone. The latest technology in polymer science has taken artificial grass to the next level. Realistic coloring, texture and improved installation techniques will have your neighbors wondering if it is real or not. Ask your licensed contractor to show you samples of the artificial grasses he installs before you buy.

2. Buy an artificial grass that has the aesthetic look and feel that will blend in with your overall landscape – Climate plays a large role in this decision. If you live in a humid, moist climate where the neighborhood lawns stay green all year you might want to buy a lush single-colored artificial grass in a deep green color. If you live in a warm, drought-prone climate in which natural grasses tend to brown during the dry season you might want to buy an olive bi-color (will have a yellow hue) or verdi green bi-color artificial grass with brown thatch to give your yard that realistic look.

3. Shop around – get several estimates from knowledgeable and experienced contractors before you buy. Labor prices vary regionally, as do artificial grass prices. Always used a licensed contractor. You can check with your local builders exchange or license bureau for more specific information for your area.

4. Be sure you are installation ready – Look at every aspect your yard and landscape - are there any items you should add to your list that need to be repaired, replaced or could use some renovation? Installing artificial grass should be the last step (similar to installing natural sod). Be sure you have addressed any drainage issues. Be sure you have come to a conclusion on your hardscape layout. Be sure you have already given serious thought to shifting your live goods to low water/native plants. Are you removing all or some of your sprinklers? Artificial grass installers normally provide full services including excavation, drainage, and the installation and modification of your landscape needs. Be sure of what your installation includes before buy! Not all contractors use the same installation methodology! Ensure your contractor specifically identifies the steps to be taken and warranties provided. Be aware of any potential "up-charges" and avoid contractors that present a low initial price but then give themselves plenty of room to charge you more for incidentals.

5. Educate yourself on artificial grass rebate programs – Many areas are offering rebates for artificial grass installations. Check with your local municipality and/or water district to see if you qualify. Many areas require an “interview” before the installation in order to qualify for the rebate. These rebates offer considerable savings and can have a significant impact on your decision to buy artificial grass.
