Artificial Grass Maintenance

Artificial Grass Maintenance

While the maintenance for artificial grass is significantly easier and less expensive that natural grass, it still requires proper care. Customers that have bought artificial grass should be aware of some of the maintenance basics. Post artificial grass installation maintenance items include:

Rake or brush/broom sweep (against the grain) your artificial grass installation every few months. It helps to revitalize the pile and to bring small foreign objects to the surface for removal. Never use a metal rake or brush though! It can tear the artificial grass fibers causing over fibrillation and may actually void your warranty!

Disinfect your artificial grass installation semi-annually. This can be accomplished in several ways.

  • Turf Disinfectant – there are several enzymatic cleansers available. They are environmentally friendly.
  • Vinegar and Water wash – with a hose attachment or a pump sprayer. Simply spray the solution onto your artificial turf.
  • Bleach Wash – diluted bleach will not discolor the turf. One tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water. **It is always necessary to test this first on a small area - perhaps on a remnant you have left over to be sure you have a sufficiently diluted solution.**

Cleaning your artificial grass and artificial lawn infill – Spray down with a hose on a regular basis. We also recommend using vinegar or an enzymatic cleaner to disinfect your lawn, as well. Animal dropping need to be picked up regularly and sprayed down with water, vinegar or turf cleaner. Cleaning frequency will depend upon traffic, use, and whether or not you have pets.

Periodic refilling of your artificial grass infill – The deeper the infill, the longer infill will last. Upper level materials tend to be exposed to heavier traffic, UV and weather. Vacuuming out the top layers of infill and refreshing the surfaces with new products will help recapture almost all of the original feel of the area. Sloped areas may also experience more loss of infill than a flat surface. Turf rows should be installed across the slope to help hold in the infill materials. Lost infill materials should be gathered or replaced to the surface for best results. Newer generation, denser, grasses will have much less infill loss so refreshing will be required much less frequently. Several latest generation grass (like our Nature's Sod Premier) require minimal to no infill.

Customers with tee lines and chipping areas should be provided additional infill materials to properly maintain their infill depth over time and use.

Pets – animal waste should be picked up regularly and the affected area sprayed with a hose. Utilize the disinfectant methods stated above.

Your artificial grass installation contractor should explain all of these basic maintenance steps to you.
