Synthetic Turf Baseball

Artificial turf first came to prominence in 1965, when AstroTurf was installed in the newly-built Houston Astrodome.  The use of AstroTurf and similar surfaces became widespread in the 1970s and was installed in both indoor and outdoor stadiums used for baseball and gridiron football in the United States and Canada. Maintaining a natural grass playing surface indoors, while technically possible, is prohibitively expensive.

Other teams chose to play on artificial surfaces outdoors for the reduced maintenance cost, especially in colder climates – examples include Cincinnati's Riverfront Baseball Stadium, Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Baseball Stadium and Philadelphia's Baseball Veterans Stadium.

Reasons given by synthetic baseball turf’s early proponents were varied
•    Ease of maintenance
•    Simpler conversion from baseball to football or vice-versa
•    Better drainage
•    No need for a “practice field” - Football teams, even at the high school level, would not practice on their main field for fear of tearing it up during the week - with an artificial lawn there was no longer a need for practice fields.

Synthetic lawns have actually been used (in a color to simulate dirt or clay) for “infield” areas providing a natural and consistent ball response throughout the field. With synthetic lawn baseball fields, permanently inlaid white turf for foul lines, batter’s boxes and coach’s boxes eliminate the need to repeatedly paint or chalk the field.

Purchase Green’s dense, plush sports turfs are a great option.  Our high density products demonstrate less fiber and infill movement resulting in greater consistency and durability. The porous system allows games to be played during and immediately following heavy rains.
